Matip and Virgil van Dijk are Klopp’s first choice centre-back pairing this season and the duo have been instrumental for the club as they continue their quest to seal a quadruple.

The Cameroonian scored once and registered two assists in his last five Premier League outings for the Reds and was named as the Player of the Month in February, leading many to suggest that he is in the best form of his career.

However, Klopp has insisted that Matip not in his best form at the moment, but hailed him for maintaining a consistent level of performances on the pitch.

“Is Matip in his best form? No”, Klopp told a press conference.

“Most ‘obvious’ form as he’s scored and assisting and defending but he is so consistent.

“He won Player of the Month, that’s great.

“Long, long, long may it continue.”

Klopp added that one area his team need to work on improving is the way they start games as they were not good enough from the first whistle in recent outings.

“I didn’t like our start in the last few games, other teams are more energetic.

“I get other teams adapt a lot.

“We face teams with more time than us to prepare so I accept we have to adapt and figure it out in games.

“That’s what we try to improve.”

With Premier League leaders Manchester City dropping points in their latest outing, Liverpool are now just four points behind in second with a game in hand and they will be determined to not slip up on Wednesday, when they host Arsenal.
