Morelos suffered a thigh muscle injury on international duty and he has been ruled out of the big Old Firm derby on Sunday between Rangers and Celtic.

The forward has also been ruled out of their Europa League quarter-final tie against Braga as well.

But the Old Firm is now Rangers’ focus as they look to gun down Celtic in the league title race and Ferguson conceded that Morelos’ absence is going to be a major blow for the Glasgow giants.

He stressed that it is time for the other players to step up and make a name for themselves as the Rangers number 9.

The Rangers legend insisted that the Gers need to deal with the Colombian’s absence and get on with proceedings.

The former Rangers captain said on the Go Radio Football Show: “It’s a massive blow, no doubt about it.

“He is one of Rangers’ main players, but it is an opportunity for somebody else to go in and show that they can be the Rangers number 9.

“You have got Kemar Roofe, you have [Fashion] Sakala and even Ryan Kent can play through the middle.

“To lose Morelos is a big blow but look, it happens in football so you need to go on.”

Morelos has been in good form lately for Rangers and Giovanni van Bronckhorst will need to find a way to beat Celtic without his top striker.
