The Cityzens are on course to win a fourth top flight title in five years this season but are still facing strong competition from the Reds, who are three points behind.

The Premier League is the only trophy Manchester City can win this season, while Liverpool, who have already lifted the EFL Cup are still in the running for the FA Cup and the Champions League, in addition to the top flight title.

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has suggested the media are favouring Liverpool over his side, but Aldridge believes that the media simply know the reality of the two clubs.

Aldridge insists that Liverpool are a genuine club unlike Manchester City, who have had to fabricate themselves into an elite outfit through heavy spending, but are still struggling to taste success in Europe.

“The Premier League should be down on their knees thanking Jurgen Klopp for making it half decent and interesting, because without Liverpool the Premier League would be absolutely rubbish, with just one team winning it every year”, Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“The media may be perceived to favour Liverpool over Manchester City because they know that we are a genuine club.

“We haven’t had to fabricate it and do things like City have.

“They have a great manager but he can’t win the Champions League with them.

“Without Liverpool, our league would be like Paris Saint-Germain in France or Bayern Munich in Germany.

“Before City did what they’ve done, the Premier League was never like this.”

Liverpool will have the opportunity to add another piece of silverware to their trophy cabinet at the weekend, when they locks horns with Chelsea in the FA Cup final at Wembley.
