Having secured safety in the Premier League this season, Newcastle under their new ownership are now looking to step up their rebuilding process as they aim to become one of the top clubs in Europe.

While the Magpies are nurturing lofty ambitions, their arch rivals Sunderland are pushing to end their four-season stay in League One and are now one game away from promotion to the Championship, having booked a place in the playoff final against Wycombe Wanderers.

Newcastle boss Howe has revealed that he would one day love to manage the Tyneside giants in a Tyne-Wear derby against the Black Cats.

Howe explained that he has heard a lot about the incredible atmosphere during derbies, and stressed he would like to experience it himself from the dugout one day.

Asked whether he wants Sunderland to be promoted from League One, Howe told a press conference: “Wow a very difficult question…

“I’d say I’d love to experience managing a derby at some stage.

“I’ve heard so much about the atmosphere so I’d like to manage one of those games at some stage.

“That’s my answer…”

Newcastle are gearing up to host Arsenal in their last home game of this season on Monday, while Sunderland will take on the Chairboys at Wembley on 21st May.
