The 20-year-old versatile defender, who has also played on either wing as well as in central and attacking midfield, spent the last two seasons on loan in the Scottish Championship at struggling teams, but impressed with his performances.

Maxwell, having spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Ayr United, made 37 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals, laying on four assists, collecting a sole booking. He travelled to Dubai with Rangers’ senior team and trained under Gerrard in the winter of 2020.

The teenager pointed out that during the time he was called up to train with the first team, he found the aura surrounding the Liverpool legend to be ‘ridiculous’, leading to him feeling nervous and tense.

Going away with the Rangers first team and having Steven Gerrard as your manager is a lot at that age. His aura is ridiculous”, Maxwell told The Athletic.

When you went around, you felt you were there just because players are missing and you did what they needed. It was tense.

You felt more nervous going in to train than you did playing a game. The other boys said that too.”

Maxwell stressed that as one of the younger players he did not get to enjoy a lengthy conversation with Gerrard, but things could have been different had he established himself in the first team.

I must have trained under him about 100 times but we didn’t have a conversation, he would just say ‘Hi’ if you passed him”, he added.

He was the same with the other younger boys until Nath[an Patterson] proved himself in the first team and then that was him in.”

The teenage left-back is currently looking for pastures new after his contract with the Gers expired this summer and he turned down an opportunity to stay.
