Botman completed a much-talked-about move to Newcastle from Lille this summer for a fee of around €37m.

AC Milan were also interested in him but the defender decided to join the Magpies and he is considered one of the best young defenders in Europe at the moment.

However, Botman is yet to make his debut for the Netherlands and has continued to remain the captain of their Under-21 side.

Yilmaz, who played with Botman at Lille, is a big fan of the defender and has seen first hand the development of the Dutchman over the last few years.

The new Fortuna Sittard striker stressed that the defender deserves to be part of the senior Netherlands squad.

The Turkish forward told Dutch magazine Voetbal International: “[He is] a monster, by the way, Sven.

“He came to Lille as the great unknown but what a defender he has become.

“He belongs in your national team.”

Botman has already made an impression in pre-season at Newcastle and is expected to be in the starting eleven when they host Nottingham Forest on the opening day.
