The striker became Newcastle’s record signing this summer as they agreed on a deal with Spanish outfit Real Sociedad in a surprise move.

Isak is highly rated in Europe and is now Eddie Howe’s young striker option this season, something the Magpies boss wanted going into the window.

The Tyneside giants had to modify their transfer strategy to get a deal over the line for Isak, paying Real Sociedad the majority of the club-record £60m fee for him up front.

Moreover, Newcastle’s deal-makers also managed to convince Isak to compromise on his wage demands to secure his signature.

However, the Magpies could have missed out on Isak as a Premier League rival tried to hijack their swoop.

According to Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, Manchester United also approached Isak with a lucrative contract offer as he was set to leave Real Sociedad.

But the striker, listening to advice from his agency, rebuffed the Red Devils’ proposal before opting to put pen-to-paper on a deal at St James’ Park.

Los Txuri-Urdin were also aware that Manchester United contacted Isak’s entourage, but the Spaniards did not receive any official offers from the Premier League giants.

Newcastle are working on getting Isak international clearance in time for him to be eligible to face Liverpool in a top flight clash midweek.
