The Reds have been challenging for trophies both in England and in Europe for the past few seasons under Jurgen Klopp, even succeeding in getting their hands on several of them, including the Premier League and the Champions League.

And while Liverpool have been outspent in the transfer market by many of their rivals, including the likes of Chelsea, Manchester City or Manchester United, the Merseyside giants have been able to maintain their standards and consistently be in the conversation for honours in all the competitions they take part in.

There have been suggestions that Liverpool’s owners FSG’s reluctance to match the spending of their rivals has held back the club from achieving more on the pitch, but Reds legend Barnes insists that is not the case.

Barnes stressed that Liverpool have been able to compete and better many of their rivals despite investing less over the last few seasons and as such FSG being at the helm is not an issue.

Asked whether he thinks FSG are limiting Liverpool’s chances of success on the pitch with their reluctance to spend big in the transfer market like their rivals, Barnes told Bonus Code Bets: “FSG have never spent that much money and Liverpool have been one point off the league, won the Champions League, lost five games so that gives me a vote of confidence

“Liverpool isn’t a team that goes and spends money like a team like Chelsea or Man City, and they’ve competed with Man City and they’re better than Chelsea so I don’t think FSG are an issue for them at all.”

The Reds spent around £91m in the recently concluded window, less than any of their top six rivals, and brought in a substantial sum from selling Sadio Mane to Bayern Munich.
