Cresswall penned a season-long loan deal with Millwall this summer and the centre-back begun life at the Den impressively by scoring three goals in his nine league appearances for the club.

However, the 22-year-old Leeds loanee was dropped from Rowett’s matchday squad in Millwall’s last two Championship games, against Rotherham and Middlesbrough, respectively.

The Millwall boss admitted that leaving Cresswell out of the matchday squad was a very tough decision for him to make.

Rowett backed his decision to go with Evans over Cresswell, explaining that the 27-year-old is a versatile player who provides the side with a lot of depth.

“Do we put Cressy, who can play centre-back, on the bench?”, Rowett told the South London Press.

“Do we put Scottie, who can play left wing-back or attacking left-back, on the bench?

“Or do we put Evo, who can cover two or three positions.

“That was really the decision and it was a horrible decision to have to make.

“I don’t want to leave young Charlie or Scottie out of the squad but unfortunately two players have to be out of the squad.”

Next, Millwall will take on Bristol City, and Cresswell will be looking forward to training hard to get back into Rowett’s matchday squad on Saturday.
