The Blues have been struggling all season to get their campaign going despite spending more than £550m over the last two transfer windows.

Chelsea are sitting ninth in the Premier League standings and are currently 10 points behind Newcastle, who are in fourth, which is the last Champions League slot.

It is likely to be an uphill battle for Chelsea to get into the top four this season and they have won just two of their last eleven Premier League games.

However, Azpilicueta is refusing to give up and insisted that breaking into the top four is still very much in Chelsea’s hands.

The Chelsea captain pointed out that he is expecting the new signings and the players coming back from injury to make a significant impact in the second half of the season.

The Spaniard told The Athletic: “In the Premier League, we have to have a very strong second half of the season to reach the top four, but it’s in our hands. I refuse to give up on that.

“Am I stressing this to my team-mates? Yes, yes! I understand it’s difficult to be positive in moments like this, but I will never allow us to just give it away, like we don’t have a chance.

“We can do it.

“We have players coming back from injury. We have new signings.

“The ambition from the new ownership is very clear.

“We are not where we want to be, but we will work to get it back.

“We have to make it a success.”

Chelsea have a London derby on Saturday when they take on West Ham at the London Stadium.
