Gnonto was brilliant and scored in Leeds’ 2-2 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

The Italian was a constant threat and has been one of the bright sparks of another difficult season for the Whites.

Leeds signed the teenage attacker on the final day of the summer transfer window and very few expected him to make such an impact in his first campaign in the Premier League.

But Newsome has a few worries about him, one of them being that Leeds could burn him out by overplaying him.

The former White insisted that despite his tender years, Gnonto is a mature player who is prepared to do the dirty side of the game apart from his ability to make an impact in the final third.

However, he is also worried that Gnonto could be the next Raphinha who Leeds could lose after he tears everything apart at Elland Road.

Newsome said on BBC Radio Leeds: “He is [going from strength to strength].

“My worry is that we don’t burn him out because he is a young lad.

“He is physically mature, I am involved in the game and go and watch Under-21 games, and there are kids running there, he is far from that.

“He is a physically mature young man, he is playing absolutely at the top level and he is tearing right-back to pieces.

“He is always a threat, he is honest, he is genuine, he is full work and he will do the dirty side of the game where he goes to close full-backs down and put his foot in.

“He doesn’t do it half-hearted, he will sprint, he will do everything to close them down and if he can put his foot in, he will try and win the ball.

“The worry is that he is a bit like Raphinha who comes into the club, sets the world on fire and in a year’s time, someone comes in with a massive amount of money and whisks him off down the road.

“I hope that’s not the case.”

Gnonto is almost certain to start when Leeds again take on Manchester United at Elland Road on Sunday.
