The Yorkshire outfit are in 17th place in the league table, only one point clear of the relegation zone and have not won in the league since November.

Next Leeds will travel to Merseyside to take on 18th placed Everton today before they face relegation strugglers Southampton on 25th February.

Prutton is of the view that Leeds have a very good competitive squad to survive in the Premier League and he believes it is up to the players to perform on the pitch regardless of who the manager is.

The former Whites star questioned whether Leeds would deserve to stay in the top division if they fail to beat struggling sides like Southampton and Everton.

He also stressed that if Leeds aspire to be the team they once were, then they must win their next two games.

“All I know is that this is a competitive group of players that can survive in the Premier League so regardless of who comes in and how they put the team out and how they set them up, it’s up to the players to perform”, Prutton wrote in his Yorkshire Evening Post column.

“You are looking next at an Everton team that has struggled and a Southampton side that has got its manager sacked after getting another manager sacked.

“If you can’t beat them then should you really deserve to be in the Premier League?

“If there’s any aspirations of Leeds moving forward and becoming what it was 16-17-18 years ago then it’s about putting teams like this to the sword.

“It absolutely is and there’s no two ways about it at all.”

The last time Leeds visited Goodison Park in February 2022, the Yorkshire outfit suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of the home side.
