Son came on in the second half and made a difference on Sunday when Tottenham beat West Ham 2-0 at home in the Premier League.

The South Korean has struggled for form this season for Spurs but he was lively when he came on against West Ham and got his fourth goal of the ongoing Premier League campaign.

Owen conceded that given the fact that Son is an absolute icon in his homeland and is probably one of the best players in the Spurs squad, it should be difficult for him to accept a role on the bench.

He believes it is a testament to the forward’s attitude that he continued to remain positive and made a difference to the team when he came on and scored the goal against the Hammers.

Asked how it is difficult it is for a top player to be put on the bench, Owen said on Premier League TV: “It is very difficult

“People probably think that you get paid X amount of money and you should do it.

“To be at the very elite, to be top class like Son, it takes you to be very driven and you see the game very different way, I guess.

“You are not like one of the squad members where half the time you are happy to play and sometimes happy to be a sub.

“To be what he is, it takes a certain type of person and attitude and then when you get left out, it almost hits you like a ton of bricks I feel.

“But he has got the most exceptional attitude to the game and every time he gets put on the bench, which is not often, he comes on and makes a difference.”

Spurs broke into the top four with that result but they have played a game more than Newcastle United, who are sitting just below them.
