Piroe, who was prolific under Martin at Swansea City, was linked with a possible move to follow his former manager to Southampton in the summer.

Instead it was Leeds United who agreed a fee with Swansea for the striker and he completed a switch to Elland Road.

Piroe has been in superb form for Leeds so far this term and is expected to be a key man in the Whites’ push for an instant return to the Premier League.

Martin admits that if Piroe had gone to Southampton it would have been a boost, but revealed it was never on the agenda.

“He’s an outstanding player”, Martin told a press conference.

“He was never an option that was available to us because of the options we have up front.

“It’s no surprise to me that he was started the way that he has.

“Would he have added to this group? Yes.”

Martin will have to find a way to stop Piroe being at his best when his Southampton side play host to Leeds in the Championship on Saturday.
