Minteh, 19, came through the youth ranks at Gambian side Steve Biko and joined Odense Boldklub in 2022.

The talented attacker made a permanent switch to Eddie Howe’s team in the summer transfer window and he was immediately shipped out to Feyenoord on loan.

The Gambian star has already made eleven appearances for the Dutch outfit this term, including two Champions League outings.

He has accrued much acclaim for his skilful moves on the pitch and Afellay dubbed him a rough diamond for his on-field talent.

However, the man who won 53 caps for the Netherlands, pointed out that Minteh still needs to learn more to flourish, stressing that the Gambian star has adapted to a top European league well.

He is a rough diamond who still has a lot to learn”, Afellay said on NOS’ Studio Voetbal (via Voetbal International).

He missed the view around him today and kept looking down.

“You have to know what is going on around you.

That is a point of development, but we should not forget that this boy was still playing in Gambia a little over a year ago, so he has cleverly asserted himself in this level.

He can only get better.

The Magpies are hoping that Minteh will get valuable experience during his loan stint with Feyenoord, which will help the Premier League side in the future.

Now it remains to be seen whether the Gambian will be able to impress Howe and get the opportunity to represent Newcastle next term.
