Dessers has been one of the most criticised players at Rangers this season and has failed to make a big impact since joining the Glasgow giants in the summer.

The forward has struggled to score goals consistently and has been on the receiving end of criticism from fans and pundits alike.

The Nigerian has another opportunity to impress under new manager Philippe Clement and he scored in Rangers’ 4-0 win over Hibernian at Ibrox at the weekend.

Dalziel conceded that Dessers has failed to live up to the expectations at Rangers but insisted that the goal against Hibs could make a difference.

However, he stressed that the Nigerian will have to be more consistent and continue to score goals if he wants to turn the opinion around about him amongst the Rangers fanbase.

The former Rangers star said on Clyde 1’s Superscoreboard: “It’s difficult coming into a club of the size of the Rangers.

“All of a sudden you are getting a bit of criticism, your performances are not up to the level, which obviously the Rangers fans were expecting but he got his goal at the weekend.

“Goals give you confidence as a striker, especially at home in front of the fans.

“He gets the goal; he goes away and he is looking forward to the next game.

“I have been one of his critics and I think he has got to up his game.

“If he can keep progressing, keep in the team first and foremost and score goals, then obviously he is going to win the Rangers fans over.”

It remains to be seen whether Dessers gets into the starting eleven when Rangers travel to Sparta Prague on Thursday night for a Europa League game.
