In the absence of first-choice defender Sven Botman, Eddie Howe has fallen back on his old guard, using Lascelles in Newcastle’s last five league games.

The 29-year-old has also been entrusted with the skipper’s armband in those games, three of which he has helped his side win.

Lascelles’ getting back into the starting line-up has pleased his long-time associate Schar, who believes that the former England Under-21 international has been performing at a high level.

“I think he has been brilliant he is stepping in and performing at a really high level”, Schar told BBC Newcastle.

“I am really happy for him as well because obviously before it was not probably easy not playing too much.”

Schar knows the feeling that Lascelles had to go through when he was not playing, having himself experienced something similar.

“I know how it is I was in a similar situation.

“But he is such a professional and great character off the pitch as well and I think he performed really well.”

He added: “I am happy for him.”

The duo have shared the defensive responsibilities in Newcastle’s last five league matches, having kept three clean sheets.
