Klopp’s first-choice left-back Andy Robertson is out of action due to a shoulder injury and the Liverpool boss has used Gomez and Tsimikas as left-backs in recent games.

Gomez, although a centre-back, has played in both a right-back and left-back role this term and Tsimikas has started three out of the last four league games for Liverpool.

Aldridge stated that he would prefer Gomez over Tsimikas for the game on Saturday and stressed that he believes that the centre-back is defensively better than the Greek international.

He also pointed out that Tsimikas has shown that he sometimes lacks concentration during games, which the Reds cannot afford to have against a team like Manchester City.

“To do this job I’d be happy with Joel Matip, then I’d say Joe Gomez over Kostas Tsimikas as he’s a better defender”, Aldridge wrote in his Liverpool Echo column.

“That’s the way I’d go but you’ve got to trust the manager, be able to defend there and not get caught out.

“Tsimikas sometimes have those lapses in concentration that you can’t afford to have against Man City – you’ve got to be 100 per cent on it, ready to defend.”

Liverpool have only won once in their last seven visits to the Etihad Stadium and now it remains to be seen who Klopp entrusts with the left-back role for Saturday’s game.
