Following a solid first season back in the Premier League, Leeds splashed the cash in the summer of 2021 and Firpo was one of the players who moved to Elland Road.

He spent his entire career in Spain before agreeing to move to England with Leeds more than two years ago.

The left-back stressed the importance of Orta, the then Leeds sporting director, in his decision to move to the Yorkshire giants.

He claimed that Orta’s personal touch and the way he connected with the players at a human level made him a top sporting director.

Firpo also admitted that Marcelo Bielsa and his coaching staff spoke Spanish and it helped him to communicate better when he initially moved to England.

Asked why he agreed to join Leeds, Firpo told Spanish outlet Relevo: “The first was Victor Orta, the sporting director.

“He was the very top.

“He is interested in you, and your family, he is the first one to write to you when you are injured and he helps with many day-to-day things.

“There was also Bielsa and his coaching staff, who were Spanish-speaking and I was going to be able to communicate much better, although I also speak English.

“They had done very well in the previous season, bordering on the European spots.”

Firpo has struggled with injuries since last season and only recently returned to the pitch following a lengthy layoff.
