Liverpool legend Steve Nicol feels there is one question mark over Xabi Alonso being able to step into Jurgen Klopp’s shoes at Anfield.

On Friday, Klopp announced that he will step down from Liverpool’s managerial role at the end of this season, stunning the football world.

Several candidates have been linked with the Liverpool job and current Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso is one of them.

Nicol stated that he was saddened to hear the news of Klopp leaving Liverpool and believes that the German deserves respect and admiration for the job he has done with the Merseyside club.

Alonso is a key contender and Nicol thinks there is no doubt the Spaniard can coach players, but stressed the question is whether he can handle the demands of being Liverpool manager.

“Sad news for everyone who loves Liverpool, but respect and admiration for everything Klopp has done”, Nicol told Inside Futbol.

“The only question over Alonso is does he have enough experience to cope with the demands of one of the biggest clubs in the world?

“Can he coach footballers? Yes!”

Bayer Leverkusen are currently at the top of the Bundesliga table under Alonso and it has been suggested that the German outfit are confident in keeping the Spaniard at the club next season.

It remains to be seen if that changes if Liverpool make a move for their former player.
