Ilia Gruev revealed that he opted for a Leeds United move in the summer because he knew the Whites are a club of massive stature with a goal to get back in the Premier League.

Leeds were keen to strengthen their midfield in the summer after a host of players departed Elland Road and Gruev was signed.

Gruev agreed on a move to the Yorkshire outfit late in the summer transfer window and with his recent performances, he has made himself a key player in Daniel Farke’s side.

The Leeds star stated that he wanted to try something new to improve his game in the summer and added that he was aware that Leeds are not one of the ordinary Championship clubs.

Gruev revealed that he was aware that Leeds are a massive club with a goal to get back in the Premier League and stated that he was convinced after talking with Farke.

“I felt in the summer that I wanted to do something new, wanted to improve my game, also maybe [play] another kind of football”, Gruev said on the official Leeds United podcast.

“And on the last two days of the transfer period, I also wanted to do something that is good for me.

“I would not have changed clubs if there was not such a good offer from a club which I knew and which was big.

“Yes, I had a talk with the boss, with Farke and I had a very great talk with him and then I also knew that Leeds are not a normal Championship club.

“So I knew that we wanted to get promoted as soon as possible and I knew it is a massive club.

“Also, I think everybody in the world knows that the Premier League is the best league in the world and we are very, very close to going to the Premier League.”

Gruev has featured in 14 league games for Leeds so far and will be determined to help them earn promotion this season.
