Former Championship star Sam Parkin has admitted that Daniel Farke finally has all the pieces he needs to propel Leeds United to a second-place finish and automatic promotion this season.

Leeds have won their last five league games on the trot and will host bottom-placed Rotherham United at Elland Road this weekend.

They are a point behind second-placed Southampton having played a game more, but Parkin feels it is now a complete toss-up between those two teams for the last automatic promotion spot.

He believes Southampton have more depth in their squad but stressed that Leeds have shown in recent weeks that they have more options than would have been imagined.

Parkin conceded that Farke did not have the squad at the start of the season but feels that now the Leeds boss has the options he needs to earn them an automatic promotion to the Premier League this season.

The former Championship star said on the What The EFL Podcast when asked to choose between Southampton and Leeds: “I am going nowhere near that question.

“It’s a toss of a coin.

“Southampton have got really good depth; they have got great options.

“I don’t know if Leeds would get hindered by injury but maybe I think Southampton have that little more depth.

“But Leeds had the problem in centre-back and Ampadu has gone in there and been amazing.

“Gruev has come into midfield and has been incredible so all of a sudden they do have quite a few options.

“I think they are a bit more exciting in the attacking areas; the front players are so explosive – James, Gnonto, Summerville – they have got a nice trio to rotate in the front positions.

“They are incredible at home and all the kind of pieces of the jigsaw are finally available to Daniel Farke.

“That wasn’t the case in the early part of the season.”

Leeds progressed in the FA Cup as well when they beat Plymouth Argyle in extra time earlier this week.
