Former Bundesliga striker Jan Aage Fjortoft has claimed that Xabi Alonso will only take up an offer from Liverpool if he feels he is ready for the job.
With Jurgen Klopp set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, the club are looking to identify their new manager in the coming months.
Alonso has emerged as the favourite to replace the German at Anfield with his Bayer Leverkusen side gunning for the Bundesliga title this season.
There are suggestions that the Spaniard is planning to stay at Leverkusen next season, but there are also claims that he wants the Reds job.
Fjortoft pointed out that Alonso’s coaching career so far suggests that he takes a decision after proper deliberation and he does not take any decision in a hurry.
The ex-Bundesliga man stressed he will only accept an offer from Liverpool if he feels he is ready to be at Anfield.
Fjortoft took to X and wrote: “I don’t doubt Alonso’s passion for Liverpool.
“Just saying that his record shows he is a man who makes his steps with maturity and an awareness of his own development.
“Seems a decision will be based on that.
“If he says YES to Liverpool, he certainly thinks he is ready
“This is all about timing.”
Liverpool are also looking at other candidates, however, former Red Alonso is believed to be their top target.
