Former AC Milan director of football Frederic Massara has emerged as a strong candidate to become the next sporting director at Liverpool, according to The Athletic.

Liverpool are not only in the market for a new manager but are also looking to bring in a new sporting director.

The Reds are prioritising appointing a sporting director before deciding on who replaces Jurgen Klopp at the end of the season.

Several technical directors across Europe have been linked with a move to Merseyside in recent weeks.

It has been claimed that former AC Milan director of football Massara is under strong consideration at Liverpool.

The 55-year-old has been out of work since leaving the Rossoneri last summer and is keen to take up a new job.

He is currently on gardening leave but is available to start immediately, which makes him attractive to Liverpool.

The Reds want a sporting director in place soon as he will play a key role in identifying the new manager.

Florent Ghisolfi is also under consideration, but INEOS are likely to fight hard to keep him at Nice for the time being.
