Former Premier League star Jan Age Fjortoft has hailed Liverpool for being able to convince Michael Edwards to join them as head of football operations.

After Jorg Schmadtke’s departure from the Reds sporting director role they have been linked with several candidates to fill the vacated position.

FSG wanted to re-appoint Edwards, who left the club in the summer of 2022, as their sporting director, but the Englishman has agreed to return to the club as the head of football operations.

Fjortoft feels that Liverpool have done a fantastic job by convincing Edwards to return to the Merseyside club and hailed the 44-year-old as one of the best in football business.

The ex-top flight star thinks Edwards’ first job will be to appoint a new manager and work with the new manager on transfer activity for next season.

“Michael Edwards returning now as a “Head of football operations” is a great signing for Liverpool”, Fjortoft wrote on X.

“Seen as one of the best in the business.

“His first job must be to get a new coach and together with him decide which players to sell and buy.”

Now all eyes will be on Edwards to see how soon he will be able to appoint Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.
