Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders is on Ajax’s shortlist but it is unclear whether they want him as coach or as an assistant to someone else.

Ajax want to bring in a new coach in the summer after a difficult season and have been looking at several candidates.

It has been claimed that they have whittled down their list to three names and are working on those options.

Lijnders has been heavily linked with a move to Ajax and will be moving on from Liverpool at the end of the season.

According to Dutch broadcaster NOS, his name is part of Ajax’s shortlist but the club’s intentions for him are still unclear.

It is not certain whether Ajax are looking at the 41-year-old as their potential new coach or an assistant.

The Dutchman is rated highly for his work at Liverpool as Klopp’s assistant but his only prior experience as coach was at NEC Nijmegen.

He lasted just five months at the Dutch club and returned to Liverpool to again become part of Klopp’s staff.

Lijnders will sit down with his representatives at the end of the season to explore his options.
