Liverpool could face an issue in their interest in a defender as their fierce rivals have a buy-back clause on the player which runs through to the 2026 summer transfer window.

Arne Slot was delivered with just one fresh face in the squad in the summer as Liverpool signed Federico Chiesa.

Liverpool kept the majority of their financial powder dry and are expected to support the Dutchman with more signings in future transfer windows.

A new left-back could be on the agenda at Anfield and Liverpool are keen on Benfica defender Alvaro Carreras.

However, Manchester United, who sold Carreras to Benfica, hold a buy-back clause on the 21-year-old.

And, according to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils have until the summer 2026 transfer window to trigger it.

That could be a complicating factor for Liverpool as the Reds could face the possibility of Manchester United triggering the clause.

Benfica initially signed Carreras on loan from Manchester United, but paid an initial €6m in the summer to keep him permanently.
