Roberto Martinez has admitted that Everton looked "out of sorts" against Liverpool last night, after the Reds thrashed his side 4-0 at Anfield in the Merseyside derby.

Liverpool were rampant and could even have had five if Daniel Sturridge had not blazed a penalty over the bar in the second half.

Martinez, who had high hopes heading into the match, was left disappointed, feeling his side threw away the match in a poor 15-minute spell and put in a performance which was thoroughly out of sorts.

"We started well enough but conceded the goal from a dead-ball situation and we put ourselves in Liverpool's hands really. We lost our concentration, lost our usual shape and it was unlike us", he said via his club's site.

"The players that came back [from injury] had to be rushed back.

"But we don't make excuses. We looked at times out of sorts, we gave the ball away too easily and we left ourselves exposed.

"We were the team with the best defensive record in the division and we have been playing in a really positive and impressive manner."

The result sees Everton sixth in the Premier League table with 42 points from 23 games, now four behind Liverpool, who are fourth.
