Jose Mourinho believes Liverpool's team are at a similar life cycle stage to his own Chelsea side.

The Blues currently sit top of the Premier League table and are considered genuine Premier League title challengers, though Mourinho has consistently sought to downplay that and say his side are a work in progress.

Liverpool meanwhile are fourth, but having thrashed Arsenal 5-1 at the weekend, are now also being taken very seriously when it comes to the final mix.

And Mourinho can see some clear similarities between his team and Brendan Rodgers' team, even if he thinks Liverpool have a big advantage by not being in the Champions League.

"They are in a similar situation as we are", Mourinho told a press conference.

"They didn't start the season by being the top favourites team, with some similarities to us in that they have some very experienced players like Stevie G and the centre-backs, but they have young players and a manager who is very good.

"The fact they don't play in the Champions League is a very big thing for them.

"It's a big thing for the other teams, but Liverpool only play one game a week and this can play a big role in March and April."

Liverpool are in action against Fulham on Wednesday as they look to build on their breathtaking win over Arsenal, while Mourinho takes his Chelsea outfit to the Hawthornes to face West Brom.
