Everton boss Roberto Martinez has defended the use of the loan system being employed by his club, but feels that it has to be a part of the game.

Everton have quality on-loan players including Romelu Lukaku, Gerard Deulofeu and Gareth Barry who have been pivotal to the success of the team this season.

And with Champions League qualification now within touching distance, there has been debate about the way Martinez and others make use of the loan system.

"The loan system has to be part of the game", the 40-year-old was quoted as saying by ITV.

"Clearly from our point of view the loan system was vital as we needed it to finish our squad.

"If you can be creative with the way you can use your resources that is part of the game.

"The two young players [Lukaku and Deulofeu] needed the opportunity to develop and Gareth Barry has come in and his experience has been very important.

"Loanees will never be successful unless you have a strong core of players and that is what we have."

Everton are currently placed fifth in the league with 63 points and a whole lot of credit for their success has gone to the three on-loan players contributing to a total of 19 goals between them in the league.
