Barcelona have accelerated their efforts to sign Ivan Rakitic from Sevilla, a move which will pave the way for Cesc Fabregas to leave the club this summer.

Rakitic played an important role in Sevilla’s Europa League triumph this season and his performances have alerted a number of big clubs across Europe.

Earlier this week, the Croatian’s father claimed that the big three of Spanish football, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in his son.

Sevilla are unwilling to part with the 26-year-old and their president, Jose Castro, claimed yesterday that they have agreed in principle an extension with the midfielder but he has still not signed on the dotted line.

Barcelona made contact with Sevilla several months ago about the availability of the midfielder and it is believed that they have already all but agreed personal terms with the Croatian.

The potential arrival of Rakitic at Barcelona should pave the way for Fabregas’ departure from the club, according to Catalan daily Sport.

Speculation about the former Arsenal man’s future at the Blaugrana has reached a crescendo and Barcelona are believed to be ready to offload the midfielder this summer.

The 27-year-old is believed to prefer a move to Chelsea, but Manchester United are also ready to rekindle their interest in the Barcelona midfielder.
