Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has praised Guillermo Varela’s display in keeping Alexis Sanchez quiet during his side’s 3-2 win over Arsenal in the Premier League yesterday.

The Red Devils, who fielded a youthful team at Old Trafford, started as underdogs against title chasing Arsenal.

However, a Marcus Rashford brace and a goal from Ander Herrera helped Manchester United to register a memorable win over the Gunners, who struck twice through Danny Welbeck and Mesut Ozil.

And Carrick, who lauded the performances of the youngsters against Arsenal, made special mention of Varela for keeping the dangerous Sanchez in check even after receiving a yellow card.

“It says a lot about the spirit and says a lot about the lads who have stepped in, certainly the younger boys”, he told MUTV.

“Obviously Marcus is going to get the headlines but I thought Guilly was terrific at right-back and especially after getting a yellow card against somebody like Sanchez.

“He was my wing-man and my support just outside of me! I thought Timmy [Fosu-Mensah] did well when he came on – to come on in a game like that at left-back which is not really his position.”

Varela, who joined Manchester United from Penarol in 2013, has made seven appearances in all competitions for Louis van Gaal’s team this season.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan spent the 2014/15 season on loan at Real Madrid Castilla.

He is yet to earn a senior cap for Uruguay but has represented the nation at Under-20 level.
