The 26-year-old full-back has played twice in the EFL Cup this season but has not been part of the matchday squad for any of Chelsea’s first four Premier League games.

Emerson has made just one appearance in the Premier League for Chelsea since February and it was a two-minute cameo appearance in a 5-3 defeat at Liverpool in July.

Chelsea wanted to let him go in the international window and despite interest from Italy, the defender stayed put in England and is unlikely to leave the club until at least January.

Emerson played the full 90 minutes in Italy’s 0-0 draw against Poland on Sunday night and he admits that being with the national team makes him feel important again.

He conceded that his time at Chelsea has not been going according to plan but stressed he is keen to work hard to make sure that he is ready to play if and when he gets an opportunity.

“With the national team, I feel important”, Emerson told Italian broadcaster Rai Sport.

“At Chelsea, so far, it has not gone as I would have liked.

“My task remains to work hard and give my best when called upon.”

Emerson still has close to two years left on his contract with the west London club.
