The 2012/13 season was the last time Manchester United lifted the Premier League title, while they triumphed in the Champions League for the last time in the 2007/08 campaign, which was followed by a Europa League win in the 2016/17 season.

Solskjaer’s men are currently second in the top flight standings, just three points behind leaders Manchester City and are up against Ancelotti’s Everton at the weekend.

Manchester United beat Everton both times their paths crossed earlier in the campaign and Ancelotti feels the Red Devils are on the right path to reaching the levels of their past teams that dominated European and domestic football.

The Toffees boss admitted he does not know when the Mancunians will reach their full potential but emphasised they need to continue on the path they currently are treading.

Asked whether he thinks the current Manchester United squad could become as good as the previous Red Devils sides he played against; Ancelotti told a press conference: “I think the project of Manchester United are on the right way to reach that level.

“Those teams of the past, when [Paul] Scholes was there, when [Ryan] Giggs was there, when [Wayne] Rooney was there, when Rio Ferdinand was there, so I think they are on the right way.

“I do not know how long it takes but the way [they are progressing now] is that one [the way to go]”.

Manchester United are also alive in both the Europa League and the FA Cup and it remains to be seen whether they will add any new silverware to their trophy cabinet in the current campaign.
