The Spanish side booked their place in the final of the Europa League after they played out a 0-0 draw at Arsenal on Thursday night, which meant that they won the semi-final tie 2-1.

It is Villarreal’s first foray into a major European final after four semi-final heartbreak and they will be taking on Manchester United in Gdansk on 26th May.

They were not one of the favourites to reach the final but Emery stressed that his side deserve the right to take on the Red Devils for the trophy.

However, he did concede that given the way Manchester United have been playing they are the favourites to win the Europa League.

Emery was quoted as saying by Spanish daily Marca: “Some of the favourites have fallen by their wayside and we deserve to be in the final against United.

“Watching their games, it can be said that they are the main favourite.”

Emery won three Europa Leagues on the trot with Sevilla, but lost a final when he was Arsenal manager in 2019.

Villarreal are banking on his record in the tournament ahead of the final and Emery admitted that he has enjoyed the way the Europa League has developed over the years.

“I lived every moment.

“This competition has grown a lot. Sevilla allowed me to grow a lot, Arsenal were a regular Champions League team and through the Europa League, they wanted to reach there.

“I just wanted to apply my experience in the tournaments.”
