McCrorie had been a fringe player at Rangers all season until he played the last two league games and did not concede a goal.
He was especially impressive in Rangers’ 3-0 win over Celtic at home on Saturday and has been quietly gathering momentum for a regular spot between the sticks next season.
Rangers are believed to be considering signing a new number one in the summer with Jack Butland said to be a big target, but Ferguson feels McCrorie should be given an opportunity to stake his claim.
He indicated that there is a bias against the 25-year-old just because he is Scottish and the Rangers legend believes the club can save good money if they decide to give McCrorie a chance.
The former Rangers captain said on the Go Radio Football Show: “In terms of McCrorie, I said last week that I guess a few people would disagree with me but for me, why not give him a chance because he is Scottish?
“He has shown enough to me that he can be Rangers number one.
“Do you go out and spend X amount on a ‘keeper or do you get a really good ‘keeper on a free transfer and pay a huge amount in salary?
“I think he has shown that in a short period of time that he can be a top goalkeeper for Rangers.
“At 25 years of age, he is not a young kid.
“For me it’s easy and because he is Scottish oh we get somebody else.
“Give him the opportunity because I think he deserves an opportunity.”
A product of the Rangers academy, McCrorie has only made four senior appearances for the club.
