Everton battled against relegation in their last two campaigns in the Premier League and last season they finished 17th in the league table, only two points clear of the drop zone.

The Toffees hierarchy appointed Dyche in January to make them competitive in the Premier League and the former Burnley boss is determined to not repeat last season’s struggles.

Rooney is of the view that Everton have been a club in a broken state on and off the field for the last few seasons and believes the squad have massively underperformed in recent seasons despite having good quality.

The ex-Everton star stressed that Dyche has done a good job since his arrival at Goodison Park and Rooney is hoping that the Toffees boss will be able to fix the state of the club.

“It’s a club that has clearly been broken over the last few years and they don’t seem to have got it right off the pitch, which is having an impact on the pitch”, Rooney told The Athletic

“The players have to do better — they’ve got some really good players and they’re underachieving through the quality of the squad.

“They got a bit of luck to get through the last two years and still be in the Premier League.

“Sean Dyche has done a good job.

“Hopefully he can steady the team and club.

“The stadium is coming and there needs to be some change to try and get that club back to where we all know it can be.”

Everton will face League One outfit Wigan Athletic in their next pre-season game, on Saturday.
