Everton boss Sean Dyche has told Southampton loan star Mason Holgate that though he has not played as much as he would have wanted for Saints, it is all a part of a professional’s life.

Holgate went out on loan to the Championship in the summer as he sought regular game time which he was not getting at Goodison Park.

The situation has remained unchanged at St Mary’s Stadium as well thus far with the 27-year-old having featured in just five of the side’s 26 league games.

Dyche, while lifting the lid on Holgate’s departure from Everton in the summer, revealed that the player made it clear that he needed a new challenge and was allowed to leave.

The tough moment he is currently experiencing at Southampton is part and parcel of a professional’s life, Dyche assured Holgate.

“The player made it very clear that he wanted that sort of fresh feel, going somewhere else, a new challenge”, Dyche said at a press conference.

“Wants to get his teeth into it and that is what I am sure he will be doing.

“I know he has not played as much as he wanted, but that is part of a professional’s life.”

Holgate has been with Everton since 2015 and is just one game short of making his 150th appearance for the club.
